Tasting Room Theology
Ken Best grew up deep within Evangelical Faith and Culture. He was a model of what it meant to be a young evangelical man, a volunteer youth leader, eventually becoming a Youth Pastor and serving on staff at a church and working in evangelical camp settings. Ken’s life has changed in many ways since that time. He is now a clinical counsellor and has started his own practice with an interest in helping people who have been impacted by religious trauma.
Come and hear Ken share some of his personal story as it relates to what it means to be grateful for a particular religious upbringing and also carry a determination to move beyond many aspects of that. Ken is interesting and funny and gracious while being unafraid to name the challenges as well as the gifts of evangelical faith.
Tickets available soon!

Julian Davis Reid Hymn Swing
Friend of Reflector Project and previous guest of Rector’s Cupboard, Julian Davis Reid, will be in town this summer running a summer school course at the Vancouver School of Theology, exploring and expanding on his Notes of Rest work that was discussed at our 2023 fall conference. Julian is an author, theologian, and musician. His work blends these practices together to explore rest in a restless world.
You can check out Julian’s work on his website, his social media (linked at the bottom of his website), and take a listen to our conversation with Julian on Rector’s Cupboard. The course runs July 14-18 and is available to audit. Check out VST’s website for more information about the course.
While Julian is in town, he is also doing a free Hymn Swing service at Brentwood Presbyterian Church, Sunday, July 13, 7pm. This will be live streamed (available to watch here) as well as in-person.

Summer Book Club
Summer book club is back! This summer we’re reading Miriam Toews’ 2021 novel, Fight Night.
Fight Night follows nine‑year‑old Swiv as she writes a letter to her absentee dad while her pregnant mom and eccentric grandma, Elvira, look after her in Toronto. After getting kicked out of school for fighting, Swiv ends up being homeschooled by her Grandma. The trio’s bond grows deeper when Grandma, despite frail health, whisks Swiv off to California to visit family. Full of humor, grief, and fierce love, the story is a celebration of survival: women teaching a little girl how to fight for joy and family through life’s chaos.
Book club meets three times over the summer (July 15, August 5, and August 26). Our first meeting we’ll be discussing Part 1 of the book (approximately 120 pages). Fight Club is widely available for purchase online and in stores, for borrowing from the local library (North Vancouver libraries have lots of copies available), and as an audio book read by the author and her daughter.
We’d love to have you join for one or all of these gatherings. Weather permitting, we’ll meet on the deck!

Blessed are the Undone Book Tour
Published in the fall of 2024, Blessed are the Undone, considers the movement of Deconstruction in the Canadian Church. Seeking to describe, rather than condone or condemn Deconstruction, Blessed are the Undone asks: what aspects of faith are being questioned, and why?
Weaving in church history, cultural analysis and their personal stories, Bick and Schuurman use canoe camping to illustrate the twists and turns of the spiritual journey. Whether you feel like you’re up the creek without a paddle when it comes to faith, or if people you love have lost their bearings, this book is for you.
Blessed are the Undone has taken to the road with a book tour, landing in Vancouver on June 5, 7-9pm at First Vancouver Christian Reformed Church with co-author Angela Reitsma Bick. For more information and tickets click here.

Faith & AI: A Christian Contribution to Ethical AI
A Reflector Project supported event with speaker Ben Perrin (past Rector’s Cupboard guest), hosted by the UBC Christian Law Student Association
As artificial intelligence is increasingly impacting our world, the need for thoughtful ethical frameworks has never been greater. A wide range of critical perspectives have emerged to contribute to this conversation.
This event invites participants to explore how Christian principles can shape the development and use of AI systems to promote human dignity, justice for the oppressed, environmental stewardship, humility, transparency, accountability, and hope. This event will offer insights into how these faith-driven values can help AI development be a force for good, rather than harm. Join us for a dynamic discussion on this emerging topic. Everyone is welcome.
This event takes place on the UBC campus but there is a option for Zoom attendance. Click here or more information and event registration.
